William Shiels, member of the Royal Scottish Academy, was commissioned to produce a series of paintings of all the significant breeds then of economic significance in Great Britain. These paintings were then used as the basis for the present work with the addition of Low's text. William Nicholson, also a Royal Scottish Academy member, made the drawings after Shiels' paintings to convert them to prints.

HENRI VAN DER HECHT BELGIAN SCHOOL 1841-1901 “MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH CATTLE AND DROVER” OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED Henri (or Hendrick in Flemish) van der Hecht was born in Brussels in 1841. The son of the celebrated landscape painter, Guillaume van der Hecht he initially took art lessons from his father before enrolling at the Brussels Academy. Here under the guidance of the celebrated painter Jan Portaels he learned the technical skill required to be a painter in the realist tradition. Enamored with landscape painting he became one of the first to embrace the principals of ‘plein-air’ painting and chose to settle in Tervuren for the opportunities that the countryside gave him. Here, van der Hecht met a number of other artists of a similar mind set, painters who were influenced by the Barbizon school artists of France. A keen painter of the effects of sunlight, this particular skill is evident in all of his paintings. In 1868 he helped co-found the influential Societe Libre des Beaux Arts with Joseph Coosemans and Edouard Huberti amongst others. This group was dedicated in its efforts to provide a free exhibition space to those artists refused exhibitions by the establishment of Belgium. Although they painted in a variety of styles and subjects, many of them adhered to the ideals of color palette favored by the French landscape painter Gustave Courbet. By 1872 he had left the Society probably as a result of his acceptance to show at the Society International des Aquafortistes, an interesting exhibition venue established by Felicien Rops. By the late 1880’s he had become one of the most revered landscape painters of his day and was given a commission by the local government of Brabant to create a series of murals. After a distinguished career, Henri vander Hecht died in Brussels in 1901; his paintings however, can still be seen at the museums of Antwerp, Brussels and Ixelles in Belgium. Lit; E. Benefit P.
