16th Century engraving "Saturn" by Adriaen Collaert (c. 1560 – 29 June 1618), from the series Septem Planetæ (The seven planets). Plate size: 8" x 11.5" Saturn; sitting on a cloud he holds a youth with a scythe between his legs; below a female figure labelled "Conscientia" holds a book and points upwards standing besides an elderly man on a chair; on the ground is a flask, spectacles atop an hour-glass and a fire in a cart; beyond is a church and a monk takes the hand of a crippled figure with no feet; plate 7 (ages of man: old age); on full sheet; after Maarten de Vos. 1581. The year he was born at Antwerp is not known, but this is determined to be between 1555 and 1565. According to the RKD in 1580 he became wijnmeester of the Guild of St. Luke. The title wijnmeester was reserved for sons of members, and he was the son of Jan Collaert I and Anna van der Heijden. He married Justa Galle, the daughter of the man he worked for, Philip Galle. He also worked for Gerard de Jode (where he made prints after Maerten de Vos), Eduard Hoeswinckel and Hans van Luyck. After having learnt the principles of the art in his own country, he visited Italy for improvement, where he passed some years. On his return to Flanders, he engraved a great number of plates, executed in a neatly finished style, but with a certain degree of dryness. His drawing is correct, and his heads expressive. He sometimes marked his plates with a cipher. From 1593-94 he took on pupils and from 1589 he worked for the Plantijn Moretus Museum. He died at Antwerp in 1618.

This attractively proportioned games table is a form famously produced in the Salem, Massachusetts area at the beginning of the 19th Century. The serpentine form with ovolo corners, coupled with richly carved foliate and reeded legs, is a motif used by those cabinetmakers and carvers associated with the successful workshop of Samuel Field McIntire (1757-1811). The hinged serpentine top has a serpentine front and sides with outset ovolo corners. The top rests above a conforming apron with a vibrantly grained mahogany panel. Richly carved and turned legs flank each corner of the apron and the proper right rear leg, swings out to support the flyleaf top. The legs terminating in ornate gilt brass casters.
